LOUISIANA, Mo. — A toll booth stood for almost a quarter-century along the Missouri approach to the former Champ Clark Bridge at Louisiana. The photo is part of a collection donated recently to the Louisiana Area Historical Museum by John Wood. Revenue from tolls helped pay for the structure, which was completed in 1928. The final charge of 50 cents – around $4.70 today – was collected at 5:59 a.m. June 17, 1952. It was paid by Ray Dolbeare, a farmer from Kinderhook, Ill., who worked at the Hercules plant in Louisiana. The toll booth was demolished afterward. The current Champ Clark Bridge opened to traffic Aug. 3, 2019.
